The FiDA Partnership conducts and commissions research to address pressing and forward-looking issues in digital finance. In 2018, with a focus on “Financial Inclusion in a Platform Era”, FiDA will examine how rapidly evolving technologies and the rise of super-platforms will influence the digital finance ecosystem, what this means for companies and organizations in the space and long-term implications.

  • Platforms and Partnerships

    In 2018, FiDA Partnership conducted light touch research to unpack platform business models, looking at how they are evolving in terms of financial services. Desk research synthesized information about the business model for more than 40 platform businesses active in Africa, with a few global players included for comparison. For a select number of these, we captured additional details about the platform participants’ economics (e.g. workers, merchants, etc.). Interviews with several key African digital platforms supplemented this information with insights and details around the challenges and obstacles that African digital platforms face, particularly in partnering with financial institutions and FinTechs to directly integrate financial services offerings into their business models. We also interviewed a few other ecosystem players to add perspectives from financial services partners and investors.

  • Micro-entrepreneurs in a Platform Era

    We talked to 27 micro-entrepreneurs in Kenya about how they use platforms (from social media sites to e-commerce marketplaces and online freelancing websites) in their day-to-day business.

    As the cost of accessing the latest in machine learning and artificial intelligence drops, more and more organizations are depending on technology to reduce the cost and improve the quality of core business functions.

    The report is based on a representative sample of 1,000 Kenyans with data-enabled mobile phones—“Digital Kenyans”—gathered between September and November 2017 by Caribou Data.

    This case study delves into LenddoEFL’s journey in developing psychometric data for financial services and, in parallel, explore the experience of Juhudi Kilimo (JKL), a Kenyan microfinance institution, in implementing LenddoEFL’s credit-scoring model.

    To accompany the release of the first digital finance Evidence Gap Map (EGM), we undertook an in-depth review of the impact evidence for each digital finance product. This report presents a synthesis of the findings from the impact studies in the EGM.

  • Learning Advances in Digital Finance 2017

    This document focuses on a series of “learning advances” identified throughout the first year of the Mastercard Foundation Partnership for Finance in a Digital Africa. It introduces two key concepts to help frame the challenge of financial inclusion in sub-Saharan Africa: Meaningful financial inclusion (involving not only access, but also the effective use of a suite of financial services products), and the pursuit of these goals against the backdrop of an ongoing “shift to digital” both in financial services and in the broader economy.
